Folate

Aliases: Folic acid

Group: Vitamin

Description:

Folate is a B vitamin that plays essential roles in the development of red and white blood cells, as well as in various metabolic processes in the body. Adequate folate levels are important for preventing conditions such as megaloblastic anemia, birth defects, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment. Folate insufficiency can lead to health issues, while elevated serum folate may be seen in certain conditions such as pernicious anemia and vegetarianism. Low folate levels can result from insufficient dietary intake, poor absorption, certain medications, or underlying health conditions.
