Sodium

Aliases: Na

Group: Electrolyte

Description:

Sodium is a type of electrolyte. Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals. They help control the amount of fluid and the balance of acids and bases (pH balance) in the body. Sodium also helps nerves and muscles function properly. If sodium intake is excessive, the kidneys eliminate excess sodium in the urine. Normally, the body maintains sodium levels in a very narrow range. If blood sodium levels are too high or too low, it may signify the presence of a kidney problem, dehydration, or another type of medical condition.
