Prealbumin is a protein produced by the liver. Prealbumin helps transport thyroid hormones and vitamin A through the bloodstream. It also helps regulate the way the body uses energy. If prealbumin levels are lower than normal, it may be a sign of malnutrition. Malnutrition is a condition in which the body is not getting the calories, vitamins and/or minerals it needs for good health.
