Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell (leukocyte) that act as the first line of defense of the immune system. There are three types of white blood cells: granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes. Neutrophils are a subgroup of granulocytes, along with eosinophils and basophils. White blood cells protect the body from infection and injury.
