Bilirubin
Aliases: Total serum bilirubin, TSB
Group: Liver function
Description:
Bilirubin is a yellowish substance produced during the body's normal process of breaking down old red blood cells. Bilirubin is found in bile, a fluid produced by the liver that helps digest food. If the liver is healthy, it eliminates most of the bilirubin from the body. If the liver is damaged, bilirubin can leak out of the liver and into the bloodstream. When too much bilirubin enters the bloodstream, it can cause jaundice, a condition that turns the skin and eyes yellow.
