Calcium

Aliases: Ca, total calcium, ionized calcium

Group: Electrolyte

Description:

Calcium is one of the most important minerals in the body. About 1% of the body's calcium is stored in the blood. The rest is stored in the bones and teeth. The right amount of calcium in the blood is necessary for the proper functioning of nerves, muscles and heart. It also helps blood vessels move blood throughout the body and release hormones that affect many functions of the body. Too much or too little calcium in the blood can be a sign of a wide range of medical conditions, such as bone disease, thyroid disease, parathyroid disorders, kidney disease, and other conditions.
