Free testosterone
Group: Hormone
Description:
Testosterone is known as the "male" sex hormone, but women also have testosterone in smaller amounts. During male puberty, testosterone provides body hair, muscle growth, and a deeper voice. In adulthood, it controls sex drive, maintains muscle mass, and contributes to sperm production. In women, testosterone is important for bone and muscle growth and healthy organs. There are different forms of testosterone. Most of the body's testosterone is bound to proteins. The proteins prevent the tissues from using the testosterone immediately, which helps control the amount of "active" testosterone in the body. Testosterone that is not bound to proteins is called free testosterone. Free testosterone acts on the tissues of the body.
