Leukocytes
Group: Complete blood count
Description:
Leukocytes, also known as white blood cells, are a key part of the body's immune system. They are produced in the bone marrow and play a crucial role in fighting infections and promoting an inflammatory immune response to pathogens. An increase in white blood cell count, or leukocytosis, often indicates an active infection, while a dramatic decrease may indicate bone marrow failure. However, elevated white blood cell counts can also be part of an inflammatory response that, if uncontrolled or prolonged, may be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health conditions. White blood cell count is considered a non-specific marker of inflammation and is used in various medical contexts, including the diagnosis of infections and assessment of inflammatory status.
