IgE

Aliases: Total immunoglobulin E

Group: Allergy

Description:

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody. Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system that help defend the body against potential threats. The body produces many forms of IgE, each of which is specific for a substance that triggers an immune response. The total IgE test measures the amount of IgE antibodies in the blood and is the sum of all forms of IgE. The total IgE test does not show which specific forms of IgE are present. The total IgE test is used to help diagnose certain health conditions, including some types of infections and immune disorders.
